ALLOY is an artist's book that weaves together human and computer generated writing to create a quasi-fictional textbook for use in the studio or classroom. It was created out of dozens of passages, quotes, memories, ramblings, and scraps of information pieced together using one of the many computer programs available for mixing text (openwound.mbutler.org). The book was originally created as a prop to help discover how to make sense out of nonsense. By forcing myself to find meaning in the book's random but familiar words, I hope to discover new ways of prescribing significance to familiar yet unpredictable aspects of life not associated with the book. It is both an instruction manual and an oracle. Since it's creation it has been used as a college textbook, theater script, devotional text, science fiction novel, and art object. It is available through Printed Matter, Inc.
